Burges Salmon advises RWE on consent for major offshore wind farms
Bristol-headquartered law firm Burges Salmon has advised RWE on securing development consent for the Dogger Bank South Offshore Wind Farms.
The project, being developed by RWE and Masdar, consists of two offshore wind farms in the North Sea: Dogger Bank South East and Dogger Bank South West.
Together, the two sites have a planned generating capacity of up to 3GW, with the potential to provide enough low-carbon electricity to meet the average annual domestic electricity needs of around 3 million UK homes.
The wind farms will be located more than 100 kilometres off the north-east coast of England in the Dogger Bank area of the North Sea.
The Development Consent Order covers the offshore wind farms and associated infrastructure, including offshore and onshore electrical cables, converter stations and connections to the National Grid.
Burges Salmon advised RWE on the promotion of the DCO application and related consenting matters.
The firm’s team was led by Jen Ashwell and Julian Boswall, with support from Leticia Mandra, Maelor James and Hermione Kemp from its Planning and Compulsory Purchase team.
Tom Tremlett, senior consents manager for Dogger Bank South, said securing development consent was a major milestone for the scheme. He said:
Securing development consent for the DBS offshore wind farms marks a major milestone in what has been an extensive and complex consenting journey. We are delighted that DBS East and DBS West can now progress to the next phase, bringing us significantly closer to delivering clean, secure electricity to millions of UK homes.
Julian Boswall, partner in Burges Salmon’s Planning and Compulsory Purchase team, said the projects would play an important role in the UK’s transition to low-carbon energy. He said:
This is a major milestone for the projects that will play an important role in the UK’s transition to low-carbon energy and reflects the strength of the project team and the collaborative approach taken throughout the consenting process.
The development consent follows the award of Contracts for Difference to both Dogger Bank South East and Dogger Bank South West in Allocation Round 7.
Burges Salmon said the latest milestone would help the projects contribute to the Government’s low-carbon generation targets.
