Mountains of Books and Bin Bags: Inside Bristol Students’ Packed Storage Units
As thousands of students prepare to pack up and leave Bristol, a local storage firm reveals that it’s seeing a surprising trend: not strange items, but extraordinary quantities of ordinary ones.
According to Vanguard Storage Bristol, student storage units are being packed with everyday belongings in volumes large enough to resemble mini flats in a box – from floor-to-ceiling stacks of books to black bin bags overflowing with clothes.
While unusual student stereotypes like traffic cones are nowhere to be seen, the sheer number of belongings being stored has caught staff by surprise.
Student units are typically filled with combinations such as:
Black bin bags packed with clothes, often including fancy dress outfits
Large stacks of books, sometimes creating mini libraries inside units
Gaming chairs, monitors, and consoles wedged beside suitcases
Boxes of kitchenware stacked beneath TVs and fans
Clothes dryers and fans packed tightly together
Lakhvinder Singh, Branch Manager at Vanguard Storage Bristol, said the scale of everyday belongings is what stands out most.
It’s not the unusual items that surprise us; it’s the sheer volume of everyday things that get squeezed into a single storage unit. When undertaking our free man and van service for students, we’re often amazed at how much they can pack into a few boxes. Many laugh and say it’s their whole life condensed into one small space.
