Multimedia Journalist
Business News Bristol is a new independent business media brand covering the companies, people and ideas powering Bristol’s economy.
We're a startup organisation but we have backing and stable funding from our parent company and we're looking to build something great for the businesses of Bristol.
We are looking for a curious, ambitious and proactive Multimedia Journalist to help build the platform from the ground up. This is an opportunity to join at an early stage (you will be employee number one with support from an established team in our parent company) and play a central role in shaping a fresh, useful and credible business news brand for Bristol.
You will be reporting on the city’s business community, from start-ups, scale-ups and professional services firms to property, planning, transport, hospitality, technology, education, retail, creative industries, charities and major employers.
This is not just a writing role. We are looking for someone who can spot a story, speak to people, turn around copy, create brilliant social content, record interviews, build relationships and help grow an audience.
The role
As our Multimedia Journalist, you will be responsible for sourcing, writing and publishing business news stories across the Business News Bristol website and social channels.
You will cover press releases, interviews, appointments, new business wins, launches, funding announcements, property updates, planning stories, events, opinion pieces and wider issues affecting Bristol’s economy.
You will also help us develop regular features, newsletters, interviews and social-first content that make the brand useful, visible and trusted.
You will be given the tools, support and access needed to do the job properly. That includes the right publishing platform, social scheduling tools, design support, analytics, recording equipment where needed, and clear editorial guidance.
Key responsibilities
Your work will include:
- Finding, researching and writing Bristol business news stories
- Turning press releases into clear, accurate and engaging articles
- Building contacts with businesses, PR agencies, founders, professional services firms, universities, venues, property companies and civic organisations
- Conducting interviews with business leaders, entrepreneurs and sector experts
- Producing multimedia content, including short videos, audio clips, social posts and image-led features
- Creating and managing content for LinkedIn, X, Facebook, Instagram and other relevant channels
- Supporting the development of email newsletters and audience growth activity
- Attending business events, launches, networking sessions and press briefings
- Monitoring Companies House, planning applications, public sector announcements and local business sources for story leads
- Helping to shape regular editorial features, sector round-ups and interview formats
- Using analytics to understand what content performs well and what readers value
- Maintaining high standards of accuracy, fairness and professionalism
- Supporting the commercial growth of the brand by creating content that attracts a valuable local business audience
What we are looking for
We are looking for someone who is:
- A confident writer
- Naturally curious about business, people and places
- Interested in Bristol and the wider South West economy
- Comfortable approaching people for comment and interviews
- Able to spot the difference between a genuine story and a weak press release
- Organised, reliable and able to manage multiple stories at once
- Confident using digital publishing and social media tools
- Interested in multimedia journalism, including video, audio and social-first storytelling
- Commercially aware, without compromising editorial standards
- Excited by the idea of helping to build a new media brand
Experience
You may already be working as a journalist, content creator, reporter, comms professional or marketing executive. Experience in business journalism would be useful, but it is not essential.
We are more interested in finding someone with strong instincts, good writing ability, energy, judgement, and a willingness to get stuck in.
What you will get
This is a chance to help build an exciting business media news brand from the beginning.
You will get:
- A basic annual salary of up to £40,000
- 40 days annual leave plus bank holidays (pro-rata if part-time)
- 4 days work for 5 days' pay
- Hybrid working
- A day off for your birthday
- Subsidised eye care
- Pension contributions (you pay 5%, we'll pay 5%)
- Private healthcare with BUPA after completion of your probationary period
On top of that, you can expect:
- A meaningful role in shaping the editorial direction of Business News Bristol
- The tools and systems needed to do the job properly
- Support to build contacts across Bristol’s business community
- The chance to develop your profile as a business journalist
- Opportunities to work across written, social, video, audio and newsletter content
- A varied role with genuine ownership
- Clear editorial guidance and room to bring ideas
- The chance to help create something useful for Bristol
- Support to create and grow our own podcast, magazine and events
